Finding Hidden Leaks
Accurate Leak Finding on the West Rand
Hidden leaks are a common West Rand headache. Old steel pipe in mining-era houses develops pinholes inside walls. Homes at the bottom of a ridge sit under high pressure that slowly forces water out of weak joints. On plots and smallholdings, a supply line can run a long way under the veld, and a leak there may never show at the surface; it just shows on the bill.
We use acoustic listening gear, thermal imaging and pressure tests to narrow it down to one spot. We open just that area, fix the pipe and can give you a written report for a municipal billing dispute or an insurance claim.
Jobs We Handle

An unexplained jump in the water account traced back to its source.

A running cistern can waste thousands of litres a month without anyone noticing.

West Rand Conditions
What Causes This Work Around Roodepoort
Hard water, steel pipe from the mining-town era, height differences on the ridges, long lines on the plots and an unreliable supply all play a part. Here's how they connect to this service:
Pressure on the Ridges
Around Kloofendal, Roodekrans and the other ridges, water pressure is all about height. Houses near the top can get a dribble at peak times, while homes at the foot of the hill take so much pressure that taps, ball valves and geyser fittings wear out early and old joints start to weep. We fit pressure-reducing valves where it's too high, booster pumps where it's too low, and bring in leak detection when the meter keeps turning.
Steel Pipes From the Mining-Town Days
Roodepoort grew up around the gold mines, and many of the older houses around Roodepoort still run on the galvanised steel that went in when they were built. After decades of West Rand water the inside of that pipe is crusted with rust. The flow gets weaker, the first water of the day runs orange, and eventually a joint weeps inside a wall. One or two repairs are fine. Once leaks start appearing in different rooms, it's time to re-pipe the worst runs in PEX, copper or HDPE.
Roots Working Into the Sewer
Big established trees in Roodepoort need water, and in a dry winter the old clay sewer line is the easiest place to find it. Fine roots slip in at the joints, then swell into a thick plug that catches paper and fat. Slow toilets and a yard gully that bubbles after the washing machine drains are the early signs. We cut the roots, run a camera to see how badly the pipe is cracked and replace the broken length.
Frost on Open Ground and Plots
Winter nights on the open plots and in the low ground near the spruits are noticeably colder than in town. A garden tap on a long exposed run, a pipe crossing to the outbuilding or a geyser overflow on the south wall can freeze, crack and only start leaking when the sun warms it up. We cut out the split piece, replace it and lag the pipe so it lasts the next cold front.
Water Everywhere in Roodepoort? Do This First
Find the main stopcock, usually close to the meter at the street boundary or, on a plot, where the line enters the property, and turn it off. If hot water is escaping, switch the geyser off at the board as well. Then call 082 550 3306. Someone answers at night, on weekends and over public holidays. Non-urgent work and quotes go through 087 700 7781.

Close every tap and switch off anything that uses water, then watch the meter for ten minutes. If it moves, water is escaping somewhere. Flaking paint low on a wall, a damp smell or a hollow-sounding tile are other clues.
Only at the leak itself. The equipment narrows it down to a small spot, so the opening is small too.
